This is the way my amount-of-things system works:
One: 1
A couple: 2
A few: 3 - 5
Some: 4 - 6
Several: 7 and above
A bunch: 8 and above
A lot: 10 and above
This is very general, of course, as the system is heavily dependent upon the object being described. This is more of a guideline, not so much a rule.
